Why end of life planning is important.

End-of-life planning is becoming increasingly important for all adults, and especially for older people, their families, and the wider community. It is a thoughtful process of making informed decisions that help support health, dignity, personal values, and independence into the future. Closely connected to this is another deeply important topic: having conversations about end-of-life wishes.

Although these discussions can feel difficult or uncomfortable, they are ultimately conversations grounded in love, care, and respect. They offer older adults the opportunity to express what matters most to them, whether that relates to medical care, spiritual beliefs, funeral preferences, personal values, or the way they hope to be remembered. When families understand these wishes in advance, they are often better equipped to make compassionate and informed decisions during emotionally challenging moments. Open communication can also reduce uncertainty, prevent conflict, and ease some of the burden that loved ones may carry during times of grief and loss.

End-of-life conversations do not need to happen in a single discussion. Often, the most supportive approach is to begin gently and return to the topic over time. Families may explore personal values, future hopes, practical matters such as advance care directives and important documents, and preferences for final arrangements. Equally important is creating space to listen with patience, empathy, and understanding. End-of-life planning is not about expecting the worst; it is about ensuring that a person’s voice is heard, their wishes are respected, and their choices are honoured.

Planning ahead can be one of the greatest gifts we offer the people we love. Early conversations about end-of-life wishes can bring reassurance, strengthen family understanding, and help everyone feel more prepared for the future. With honesty, compassion, and support, these discussions can become a meaningful part of living — and aging — with dignity, intention, and peace of mind.

Do you have a legal Will?

Do you have an Advance Care Plan (health)?

Do you have an Enduring Power of Attorney?

Do you know your personal and spiritual wishes?

You may wish to start with a legal Will that should be prepared by a solicitor, and complete an Advance Care Plan with your doctor.

What to say to a dying person

Facing the end of the life of someone you love is very emotional for everyone involved. It’s hard to know what to say to a dying person, but one of the most important things to remember is to not make it about ourselves. It can be hard to know what to say or do.
